Background to Sea Point Marine

BACKGROUND

"The good old days"

My career in shipping commenced in 1979 when I joined a small coastal Chemical Tanker Operator (Interchem) - as a junior accounts clerk. I swiftly found my sea legs and became a Ship Operator and by the mid 80's I was a Chartering Broker.

Communication with the ship's Captain was by 'cable' or radio telephone call by appointment, business to business written communication was by telex, contracts were produced on typewriters and there were no mobile phones to disturb our lunch breaks.

"On to bigger things"

Interchem was acquired by Stolt-Nielsen in 1989 in order to enhance and expand their fledgling Inter-European Service and after a year or so I moved into their 'deep sea' section where I was active in securing spot and long term contract business on many trade lanes; Trans-Atlantic, Middle East Gulf, India, South America, Africa, South East Asia and Far East.

In 1999 I joined Zodiac Maritime as Chartering Manager, running their small fleet of eight ageing and somewhat mis-matched Chemical Tankers. I left Zodiac in 2007 having successfully positioned the company as a credible long term participant in the global Chemical Tanker market with twenty modern vessels, by implementing a strategy of judiciously replacing the older ill-suited tonnage with fit for purpose new buildings whilst creating strong long term relationships with a reputable and well established customer base.

"A different direction"

I joined Clarksons in 2007. A surprising move many thought - a 'career principal' joining a competitive broking house. However...

For their existing and potential clients I proved to be a known entity with a wealth of experience and an excellent reputation, and was therefore trusted to solve any problems and facilitate all negotiations fairly and amicably. For their younger staff I was on hand to mentor, educate and train in a competent and empathetic manner.

For me, it was an environment where my talents as a creative individual with a wealth of experience could thrive.

"A new beginning"

2017 heralds the launch of Sea Point Marine Ltd.
